Why cleaning companies need reviews more than most

Letting a cleaner into your home or office is an act of trust. Before booking, customers want to know that your team turns up on time, is honest and does a thorough job. Google reviews are often the first place they check – and in a crowded market of local cleaners, a profile with dozens of recent reviews stands out against one with a handful from years ago.

Cleaning businesses also have a particular advantage: regular customers. A domestic client you visit every fortnight, or an office you clean every night, already knows your service well. The trick is asking at the right moment and not only once.

Different services, different moments

  • End-of-tenancy and deep cleans: ask once the job is signed off – ideally after the landlord or agent has done the inventory check and the deposit conversation is over.
  • Regular domestic cleaning: ask after the third or fourth visit, once the customer has a feel for consistency. Do not ask after every clean.
  • Commercial contracts: ask the person who manages the contract, perhaps after the first month and again at renewal.
  • Carpet, oven and window cleaning: ask the same day, when the result is most visible.

Example wording

Hi Mark, thanks for having Sparkle & Co round today. If you’re happy to, we’d really appreciate an honest Google review: [link]. Reply STOP to opt out.

If your cleaners work in named teams, you can mention them – “thanks for having Anna and Lucy round” – which tends to produce more personal, useful reviews. Never offer a free clean or discount in exchange for a review.

Protecting customers’ privacy

Cleaners see the inside of people’s homes. When replying to reviews, never mention addresses, key arrangements, alarm codes, pets’ names or when a property is empty. Keep replies short and friendly. If something was damaged or missed, acknowledge it publicly and move the details to a private conversation. Our trades negative review templates adapt well to cleaning.

Working with staff

Many cleaning businesses rely on part-time and self-employed staff. Reviews that mention cleaners by name can motivate the team, but agree in advance how you will handle any review that criticises an individual. Keep that conversation private and fair, and avoid naming staff in a negative public reply.

Reviews from landlords and letting agents

If much of your work comes through letting agents, the person paying may not be the person who sees the result. Ask the agent or landlord for a review of the working relationship – reliability, communication, invoicing – rather than asking tenants who did not choose you.

QR codes and leave-behind cards

A small card left on the kitchen side after a deep clean – “We hope you love the result. Tell others on Google” with a QR code – is a gentle way to ask. Make one with our free review stand and card template or the QR code generator.

Track what reviews tell you

Once a month, read the new reviews together. Are customers mentioning punctuality, missed areas, communication about rescheduling? Those patterns are a free quality check.

Frequently asked questions

Should I ask regular clients more than once?

Usually no more than once or twice a year. A long-standing client who reviews after their first month and again after a year gives future customers a sense of consistency without feeling pestered.

Can I ask the cleaner to request the review on site?

A friendly mention is fine, but avoid standing over the customer while they write it. A follow-up text later the same day lets them review in their own time and honestly.

What if a customer reviews the cleaner rather than the company?

That is normal and helpful. Thank them, pass the praise on to your team member, and avoid using their full name publicly if they would rather you did not.
