Reviews and trust in physiotherapy
People looking for a physiotherapist are usually in pain and want to know two things: will this person understand my problem, and will it get better? Google reviews that mention a specific condition – a frozen shoulder, a running injury, back pain after pregnancy – answer those questions far better than a star average. For independent clinics competing with larger chains and NHS waiting lists, a steady flow of recent reviews is one of the strongest signals you can have.
Handle health information with care
Physiotherapy is healthcare, which changes how you ask and how you reply.
- Never confirm someone is a patient in a public reply. Even “Glad your knee is better” confirms a treatment relationship and health information. Thank them generally instead.
- Keep the request free of clinical detail. “Thanks for visiting the clinic” rather than “Thanks for attending your lower back rehab session”.
- Follow your professional body’s guidance. The HCPC expects registrants to respect confidentiality, and the CSP publishes guidance on social media and online reviews.
- Do not ask only patients who have improved. Invite every patient at the same point in their care.
When to ask
Asking after a first assessment is usually too early – the patient has not seen progress yet. Better moments are:
- After discharge or the final planned session of a course of treatment.
- After a set number of sessions, for example the fourth, for patients on longer programmes.
- After a one-off service such as a sports massage or a work assessment.
Example wording
Hi Tom, thank you for choosing Riverside Physio. If you have a moment, we’d value an honest Google review of your experience with us: [link]. Reply STOP to opt out.
Neutral, short and free of health details. It does not ask for five stars or suggest what to write.
Replying to reviews
For positive reviews, thank the reviewer warmly without repeating any condition they mention: “Thank you for your kind words – we’re so pleased you had a good experience with the team.” For negative reviews, acknowledge the concern, avoid clinical discussion, and invite them to contact the practice manager directly. Our healthcare-style response templates show how to protect confidentiality while still responding properly.
Insurance and corporate patients
Many clinics treat patients referred by insurers or employers. Check your contracts: some referrers have rules about contacting patients for anything other than treatment. Where allowed, the same neutral invitation can go to everyone; where it is not, exclude that group consistently rather than case by case.
Privacy and permissions
In a clinic, the fact that someone is a patient is health information, which UK GDPR treats as special category data. Make sure your privacy notice explains that you may contact patients for feedback, keep opt-outs, and limit who in the clinic can see the review dashboard. Our UK GDPR and PECR guide covers the basics; this is not legal advice.
A monthly check
- How many new reviews this month, and how many replied to?
- Any recurring themes – parking, waiting room, booking, exercise sheets?
- Are reviews spread across clinicians, or concentrated on one?

Frequently asked questions
Can I reply to a review that mentions the patient’s injury?
Yes, but do not repeat or confirm the details. Thank them for their feedback in general terms and invite any further discussion offline.
Should clinicians ask patients directly?
A light mention at discharge is fine. Leave the actual request to a follow-up message so patients do not feel obliged while still in the treatment room.
We have several clinics – one profile or many?
Each physical location with its own address and staff normally has its own Google Business Profile. Send each patient the link for the clinic they visited.
